As I write this, Elvis’s greatest hits are on the stereo and we’re winding through mountains and hills in Washington state on our way to Salt Lake City. It was 9am when we left Vancouver and we’ve still got about 10 hours ahead of us on the road. I thought this was a good time to settle in and think about the first week on tour with The Boxer Rebellion.

In the last 6 days, we’ve performed in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Salt Lake City. (This post was updated after I started writing this to include events that occurred after our Salt Lake City show.)

We couldn’t have imagined how different each city would be. The venues, the landscape…everything really. It’s as though we enter a new planet traveling from town to town. Did I mention the landscape? Mountain majesties for reals.

And while no 2 shows have been the same, one constant has been the people we’ve met in each city. Everyone - friends, strangers, family - has been so warm and welcoming.  We even met a couple in Vancouver who caught our show in NYC, were psyched to catch us again in their home town and were so nice and supportive that we definitely left town felling a bit spoiled. I guess it should come as no surprise that the fans of the nicest guys in the world are just as kind and generous of spirit.

Speaking of nicest guys, we really could not have dreamt up a sweeter bunch of folks. Piers, Nate, Adam and Andy are the English brothers we never had, but always wanted. I hope they know what they’ve got themselves into.

In typical Hey Anna fashion, we’ve had a few hiccups along the way. Starting with a nightmare Airbnb in Oakland. All I’m going to say is that Matt slept on cushions under the dining room table, there were unidentified white substances on our pillow cases (well, those of us provided with pillow cases to shield us from what resembled diseased bedding…), and there was 1 towel for 6 people to use after showers miserably lacking hot water.  Did I mention we were cosily tucked directly under a major highway overpass situated next to a busy rail line?

Things were looking up after we picked up Katharine Hepburn (our RV for the tour and yes, we named it Katharine Hepburn). We even managed to squeeze her down a tiny alley in front of our new AirBnb in the Mission District in San Francisco without getting a ticket.

But then…well, let’s just say we wanted to arrive at the very first show of the tour with a bang…involving the headliners tour bus.  Still feeling bad about that one.

Old Katharine Hepburn gets a little feisty sometimes, what can I say?

She’s been good to us ever since and has been our home for the last few days. It is quite a special feeling to load your gear out of a venue at 2am and crawl into the tour van parked on the street and fall asleep.

UPDATE: Katharine Hepburn is in the hospital. Sadly, we had to miss our Denver show at The Bluebird Theater because of this. Ironically, she fell ill on Bluebird Lane in some random town in Wyoming. We are now on our way to St. Paul, MN in the more soft-spoken Heburn: Audrey.

While it’s hard to pick just one highlight so far (because, duh we’re freaking on tour and everything is a highlight), I think my favorite moment was having our Aunt Claire and our grandfather at the Portland show. The man is 84! He’d never had the opportunity to see us perform and it just meant the world to see him and our auntie out there. I’m getting a little emotional just thinking about seeing his face afterwards. Grandpa is so cute!

Ok close runner up, warm showers and a fantastic healthy kale vegetable omelet casserole creation ala Matt and Jean. OH and the dusty pitt bull puppy, Psycho Max, who showered us with kisses and cuddles (and mud) at the truck stop near Mt. Shasta.

I’m down to 4% battery now, so I shall bid adieu.
